What is the St. Gregory Diploma School of Pastoral Music?

It is an initiative of Rev.Fr. Peter Osuntope for the Archdiocese of Lagos established to train and form competent pastoral musicians, choir directors, organists, and liturgical leaders through academic, pastoral, and professional education in sacred music.

What is the aim of the Diploma in Sacred Music Program?

The program seeks to bridge the gap between theology, music, and worship. Helping students integrate faith, art, and leadership in service to the Church.

How long does the Diploma Program last?

It is a three-year, part-time program. There is also a two-year full-time program designed to accommodate working individuals and church ministers.

When are lectures held?

Lectures are conducted on weekends every Saturday, making it easier for participants with weekday commitments.

What are the admission requirements?

Applicants must have:

  • Minimum of five credits in WASSCE, including English and Mathematics.

  • A recommendation from a Catholic priest or religious superior.

  • Completion of the Preparatory Program (equivalent to ABRSM Grade 3).

  • A successful entrance examination in theory, voice, and piano.

  • A personal statement of intent and birth certificate.

What is the Preparatory Program?

It’s a 12-week prerequisite course providing foundational studies in music theory, voice, and piano. It is mandatory before admission into the Diploma Program.

What is the attendance requirement for the Preparatory Program?

Participants must maintain at least 80% attendance to qualify for the entrance examination.

Centers include:

  • Holy Cross Cathedral, Lagos

  • St. Leo’s Parish, Ikeja

  • Our Lady of Lourdes, Orile / Sts. Raphael, Gabriel & Michael Parish, Satellite Town

  • St. Thomas Aquinas College, Okokomaiko

  • O.L.P.H. Parish, Ajah

What are the areas of specialization?

Students can specialize in Voice, Keyboard (Organ/Piano), Choral Conducting, or Composition.

  • Music Theory & History

  • Voice & Piano Studies

  • Introduction to Worship and Liturgy

Is there any practical experience required?

Yes, students must complete a six-month pastoral music practicum in designated parishes.

Are there international academic partnerships?

Yes, there are partnerships with Emmanuel College and the University of Toronto, promoting academic exchange and curriculum development.

What facilities are available to students?

The school provides:

  • Grand and digital pianos

  • Orchestral instruments

  • A developing vocal studio

  • Parish attachments for practicum
    A permanent campus is being planned in Sangotedo, with a chapel, classrooms, library, and music lab.

Are scholarships available?

Yes. The school offers 100% scholarships based on performance, attendance, and service to the Church. Additional sponsorships may come from parishes or private patrons.
